Hands-on Earth layers model activities

Your students won’t just read about Earth’s interior. They’ll build it. In the egg lab, they crack open a hard-boiled egg and discover how its layers mirror the crust, mantle, and core. Then the foldable scale model has them color, cut, and assemble a model of Earth’s interior. Choose the version that fits your class: one has the scale calculations done, and the other lets students work the math themselves.

How many layers does the Earth have?

The Earth has four main layers: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. The crust is the thin, rocky outer layer we live on. The mantle is a thick layer of hot rock beneath it. The outer core is liquid metal, and the inner core is a solid ball of iron and nickel at the very center.
