Teaching the Types of Variables in Science with Comics

A Unique Approach to Variables in Your Science Classroom
The concept of variables in science can be tricky for students, especially when the information is delivered via wordy definitions.
That’s why I created this Variables Science Comic. This one-page, illustrated reosurce breaks down what a variable is, introduces the three types of variables, and gives learners a chance to practice what they have learned.
What Are Variables in Science?
Every proper experiment has variables. In order to conduct accurate scientific inquiry, learners need to be able to identify these different types of variables before they can design or analyze a science investigation. In this science comic, learners explore:
- Independent Variable – the aspect of the experiment that is changed
- Dependent Variable – the aspects of the experiment that are measured or observed
- Controlled Variables – the aspects of the experiment that remain unchanged to make it a fair test
When these concepts are presented in a visual format, students are able to connect the examples to illustrations. This helps solidify understanding and “soften” the trickiness of the terminology.

What’s Included in the Variables Comic Package?
This print & go teaching resource makes it easy for you to use comics to teach the types of variables in science:
- One-page illustrated comic (color + blackline)
- Clear definitions and examples of independent, dependent, and controlled variables
- Two practice worksheets for reinforcement
- Print-and-go format — no prep required
- Perfect for interactive notebooks or anchor charts

Why Use Comics to Teach Science?
Today’s learners LOVE graphic novels, making these resources a modern approach to teaching science.
📚 Accessible – Comics remove the intimidation factor from heavy text. Struggling readers, English language learners (ESL, ELL), and students with ADHD gravitate towards comics because they are able to understand the content.
🧠 Memorable – Visual storytelling makes abstract concepts like variables stick. Studies reveal when concepts are tied to illustrations, retention improves.
🙋 Engaging – Comics are attention grabbers. Even reluctant readers or English language learners light up when they can follow a comic.
👩🏫 Classroom-Tested – As a veteran teacher, I designed these comics to support busy educators who need resources that work for all learners.
Bring Variables to Life in Your Classroom
Instead of blank stares when you say “identify the variables,” you’ll see jaws drop and eyes light up. With this Variables Science Comic, students finally grasp the difference between independent, dependent, and controlled variables—and they’ll have practice applying that knowledge right away.
